Date & time: Saturday & Sunday, March 29 & 30, 2-8 pm

aturday, March 22, 2003, marked the 50th anniversary of the premiere performance of John Cage's Williams Mix (1951-53) for eight monaural magnetic tapes. This was the first octophonic tape music composition in the world, created and performed with eight speakers surrounding the audience.

To celebrate this historic piece and its first performance, the composer Larry Austin has created the Williams [re]Mix, a continuously performing octophonic sound installation at Engine 27 in lower Manhattan. The installation was implemented with Austin's recently developed Williams [re]Mix[er] (1997-2001), an interactive I Ching composing program.

Contributing sounds that are included in the new version of the composition were Dr. Timothy Polashek, director of Lehman's Electronic Music Center, and six of his students in Music 322 (Electronic Music II): RB Harris, Rio Malabe, Hector Marin, Tara Monahan, Frederick Munson and Ken Rizzo.

The installation will be running this weekend (March 29 & 30) continuously from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Engine 27 concert space, which is located at 173 Franklin Street (212-431-7466). Take the 1 or 9 Subway to Franklin St. and walk west one and a half blocks.  (Franklin is between Hudson & Greenwich Streets.) You can also take the A/C/E subway to Canal or the N/R to City Hall.
