Lehman College Continuing Education courses were first offered in the fall of 1978. Twenty-seven courses ranging from Basic House Plant Care to Introduction to Data Processing introduced the program to the Lehman Community. Leisure courses predominated: however, by 1980, signs of economic and social change began to impact on employment opportunities. To address this issue, the direction of the program moved towards non-credit career training courses and certificate bearing programs. In 1981, the Young People's Program for children was initiated. Learning became a family affair at Lehman College.
Today, Continuing Education at Lehman College enrolls 8200 students a year of which 75 percent are adults. Over 170 courses are conveniently scheduled for adult learners to meet the challenges of today's high-tech, computer driven economy. Those planning to enter the work force or who are preparing for entrance to college may earn their GED; upgrade their basic skills; enroll in the English as a Second Language classes; or take the Bridge to College Program to prepare for the CUNY assessment exams. Beyond the academic and job-related programs, a wide array of personal development courses are offered.
Lehman College welcomes the 2000 children and teenagers who enroll in the Pre-College for Kids and Pre-College for Teens Programs. Carefully selected courses taught by highly qualified teachers create an outstanding learning experience.
