Men's Outdoor Track and Field Team Wins First-Ever CUNYAC Crown

Lehman College Men's Outdoor Track and Field Team celebrates its first-ever CUNYAC Championship.

The Lehman College men's outdoor track and field team captured its first CUNY Athletic Conference championship on May 12, scoring 199 points and outlasting Hunter College (191 points), Medgar Evers College (81 points), and The City College (77 points) to take the title. The Lightning women scored 153 points and took second place after York College (231 points).

On the men's side, seasoned veterans dominated for Lehman, as Pete Charles, Jase Franklyn, and Joseph Bodden led the way. Charles, who was named Most Valuable Performer at the indoor track and field championships, won the long jump with a leap of 6.74 meters and the triple jump competition with a jump of 14.26 meters. Franklyn won the discus throw with a toss of 35.87 meters, while also capturing the hammer throw event with a throw of 42.10 meters. Finally, he placed second in the men's shot put with a score of 12.78 meters.

Bodden took first place in the javelin throw competition (47.32 meters), while placing second in the discus throw (31.71 meters). Newcomer and rising star Andre Goudlbourne also contributed to the championship by winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.52.

"These guys worked so diligently all year to win this championship, and now every person on this team can proudly say that they were a member of the first Lehman College outdoor track and field championship team," said Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg. "This group really came together and believed in one another. Right now, we're going to enjoy this accomplishment."

As for the Lehman women, the Lightning settled for second place, but the team still put together some standout performances. Sensation Lauren Lourick won all three jumping events, as she put forth leaps of 1.63 meters in the high jump, 5.12 meters in the long jump, and 11.51 meters in the triple jump. Veteran standout Dorothy Jean-Pierre captured the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:09.11, and Chianne Ashman won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.61. Janina Browne performed brilliantly in the hammer throw, winning the competition with a toss of 36.17 meters.
