Forum at Lehman May 3 to Focus on Financing Public Education

Councilman Robert Jackson
Other speakers will include Helaine Doran, deputy director of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE), which Councilman Jackson cofounded in 1991; April Humphrey, regional coordinator of the Alliance for Quality Education; and Ronn Jordan, vice president of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition. The forum will focus on what educators, parents and students need to know about financing public education.
Councilman Jackson became involved in the effort to improve public schools in 1980, when he enrolled his eldest daughter at P.S./I.S. 187 in northern Manhattan. He became president of the Parents' Association, as well as president of Community School Board 6, and was the lead plaintiff in the CFE suit against New York State. The case ultimately led to a landmark court ruling that the State's funding formula was unconstitutional.
Prior to his election to the City Council in 2001, he was Director of Field Services for the New York State Public Employees Federation, representing over 55,000 professional, scientific and technical employees. He is also co-chair of the Council's Black, Latino & Asian Caucus.
