Students Unite to Build Homes for Needy in Dominican Republic

This spring break, instead of heading south for sandy beaches and all-night parties, a group of students is preparing to travel to the Dominican Republic to help build homes for the needy.

Lehman Leaders Involved for Everyone (LIFE) is a diverse group of twenty students whose aim is to provide service to communities in need. The trip is being planned in conjunction with the Lehman Division for Student Affairs and Habitat for Humanity International. The students plan to work with families from the town of Nagua.

"We are enthusiastic about this mission opportunity and look forward to contributing to the construction of new housing," says group member Nicole Vasquez.

As with all Habitat projects, the group is responsible for financing the trip. For this mission, a total of $24,000 is needed to cover building materials, travel, lodging and other expenses such as insurance. To help raise funds, the group recently held a bake sale, which netted just over $500.

If you would like to help, checks will be accepted in the Office of Student Affairs. Donations can also be made using credit cards via the Habitat for Humanity International website. The event code for this project is GV6734.
