The Lovinger Theatre

The Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre will present the Folksbiene Troupe in "Mama's Loshn Kugel," a traveling Yiddish revue, at the Lovinger Theatre on Thursday, November 10, at 4 p.m. Sponsored by Friends of the Lehman College Library, the Department of Languages and Literatures, and the Bronx Jewish Community Council, the show is free and open to the community. Tickets must be reserved in advance.

Directed by Motl Didner, the revue will feature classic songs and sketches from such luminaries in the Yiddish Theatre as Sholom Aleichem, Abraham Goldfadden, Molly Picon and Aaron Lebedev. The troupe is made up of young dedicated Yiddishists, actors, singers and musicians, including Dov-ber Bernstein, Leyzer Burko, Motl Didner, Miriam-Khaye Seigel and Arianne "Khane" Slack. Zalmen Mlotek is serving as the show's executive director.

The Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre has been bringing a taste of Yiddish culture to the stage since 1915. A not-for-profit company, the Theatre focuses on preserving, promoting and developing Yiddish theatre for present and future generations.

The show will also serve as enrichment for a Languages and Literatures course taught by Prof. Zelda Kahn Newman of the Lehman faculty.

"The students in the 'Immigrant Jewish Experience' course learn about Yiddish theater," explains Prof. Newman, "and the role it played in reflecting the nostalgia Jews felt for the 'old country' and the wonder with which they regarded the 'new country.' This revue is a reworking of known material, and it will bring to life a medium that has to be seen and heard in order to be appreciated."
