Education Expert to Speak at Lehman Nov. 8

Dr. Jonathan Cohen, co-founder and president of the Center for Social and Emotional Education (www.csee.net), will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Lehman's Annual Professional Development School Conference. Entitled "Supporting Social Emotional Development to Promote Academic Success," the conference will take place from 9-10 a.m. in the Music Building's East Dining Room; and from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in Carman Hall.

"The purpose of this conference is to discuss, share and further our knowledge on why supporting social emotional development is critical in education," says Associate Dean Susan Polirstok. Those invited to attend include members of the College community, faculty from P.S. 291, Region One; P.S. 304, Region Two; the High School for Community Research and Learning, Region One; and education alumni.

Dr. Cohen is an Adjunct Professor in Education in CUNY's School of Professional Studies and an Adjunct Professor in Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is the author of many books and papers, including Educating Minds and Hearts (Teachers College Press, 1999) and Caring Classrooms/Intelligent Schools (Teachers College Press, 2001).

Following the keynote speech, a series of workshops on social emotional development will be offered by faculty from the Lehman Division of Education as well as from the Division's Professional Development School partners.
