CUNY Honors College at Lehman to Hold Open House Oct. 23
The CUNY Honors College at Lehman College will hold an open house on Sunday, October 23, at 1 p.m. in the Music Building. High school students with strong academic records are invited to attend and learn about the program's educational opportunities and financial rewards, as well as take a tour of the campus.
"I think the CUNY Honors College program is one of the best opportunities for undergraduate education in the country," says Professor of Languages and Literatures Gary Schwartz, who directs the program at Lehman. "I would encourage any student who desires a stimulating and challenging educational experience to attend and see for themselves what this institution has to offer them."
Professor Schwartz is a Classical scholar of Latin and Greek, an authority on Homer's Odyssey, and Apuleius's Golden Ass, as well as jazz saxophone, and is also a published poet. He is the editor of Eight Essays in Classical Humanities and co-author of an index to Kuhner-Stegmann's grammar of the Latin language.
Established in Fall 2002, the CUNY Honors College at Lehman offers students a complete package of benefits, including full financial assistance, a laptop computer, access to instructional technology resources, an additional scholarship for educational expenses, internship and study-abroad opportunities, and a cultural passport to various New York City institutions and events.
In addition to small classes taught by well-known scholars, students participate in interdisciplinary seminars focusing on New York City. Last semester, a poster project prepared by Honors College students from the class of 2007, who worked with Lehman's Distinguished Professor of Physics Eugene Chudnovsky, was selected for presentation at the annual National Collegiate Honors Council Conference of the Northeast Region.
Lehman's first Honors College graduate, Rivka Strom, completed her undergraduate program at Lehman in June 2005. She graduated with top honors and is now pursuing graduate work at the CUNY Graduate Center.
