Nursing Professor Receives Award for Research on Reducing Teen Violence and Drug Use

Professor Keville Frederickson of the Nursing Department was recently awarded the 2005 Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award by the Foundation of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) for her consistent and outstanding record of research designed to provide life skills to young people.

Her work focuses on developing preventative programs designed to reduce violence, smoking and tobacco use among Hispanic youth in Monterrey, Mexico, as well as minority youth in the Bronx. In addition, she has received several National Institute of Health (NIH) funded grants to manage symptoms among cancer patients in the community, and to examine end-of-life goals for persons with HIV/AIDS.

This is not the first time Professor Frederickson has been recognized for her work. Just last year, she received the R. Louis McManus Medal, the highest award given by the Nursing Education Alumni Association at Teachers College, Columbia University, in recognition of long-standing contributions of a distinguished nature to the nursing profession. She also received the Hispanic Educational Telecommunications System (HETS) award for "Faculty Leadership in Collaborative Initiatives" for her work.

Over the years she has served as the chair of the Council of Nursing Research for NYSNA and as the president of Eastern Nursing Research Society. She is currently the chair of the Doctoral Task Force for the Doctor of Nursing Science degree, to be offered by the City University in collaboration with Lehman and Hunter Colleges and the College of Staten Island.

In 2001, the Minister of Education of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, appointed Professor Frederickson as Profesora Afiliada at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) for her work with the university's first doctoral program in nursing. Dr. Frederickson has been a consultant to the UANL for four years and also taught its of their first doctoral courses as a visiting professor in the fall of 2003.

Professor Frederickson joined the Lehman faculty in 1985. She specializes in knowledge and theory development, and her research focuses on teen risk-behaviors and health disparities among minorities in urban settings, particularly Latinos and African Americans.
