With First Graduate, CUNY Honors College at Lehman Comes of Age

Rivka Strom
The CUNY Honors College began in Fall 2001 at five of the CUNY senior campuses and expanded in Fall 2002 to both Lehman and the College of Staten Island. The program held its first Commencement ceremony this May, with most graduates representing the 2001 entering class.
Strom, who received her degree in psychology, was eligible to graduate with this first incoming class because of Advanced Placement and other credits that she had earned. She also won Lehman's top prize in the social sciences and shared in the College's top overall academic awards.
Strom says she enjoyed Lehman's small, intimate class sizes and the personal attention she received from her mentors. "What I liked best," she adds, "was that there was always someone available for advisement or for anything else and that really helped me focus on my studies." In August, she will enter CUNY's new doctoral program in audiology.
Established in Fall 2002, the CUNY Honors College at Lehman offers students full scholarships, a free state-of-the-art laptop computer, access to instructional technology, internships and study-abroad opportunities, as well as a cultural passport to various New York City institutions and events.
"This is a small group we have here and that really allows for everyone to get to know one another," says Professor of Languages and Literatures Gary Schwartz, who directs the Honors College at Lehman. "We are all very proud of Rivka and wish her the best of luck."
