Graduating Business Student Steps Into Promising Management Position

This is the first in a series of profiles of selected graduates of the class of 2005.

When Mia Rodriguez first visited the College's Career Services Center last fall, she was only looking for help with revamping her resume and for information about various internship opportunities. Instead, this graduating senior ended up with a plum job at a major corporation, Frito-Lay.

For Rodriguez, who majored in business administration with a specialization in finance, the job represents an opportunity to both apply her education and further develop her skills. Hired as the company's Sales Associate District Leader for Queens, she first will go through a training program that includes riding with drivers while they make their deliveries. It's the company's way of making sure new employees learn the business from the ground up.

"I am very excited about this position," says Rodriguez. "I'm especially excited about the training opportunities because getting to know how everything works will help me become a better leader."

Rodriguez learned about the job when she attended the College's spring Career Expo. With the help of Career Services staff, she presented a polished resume that impressed Frito-Lay representative Dave Hernandez, who in turn referred her to the company's Human Resources Director.

Rodriguez credits Lehman faculty in the Economics, Accounting and Business Administration Department with giving her a strong analytical background. "My professors, especially Professor Kayaap, really stressed the importance of the customers, and that's something I will apply to my new job," she says.
