Anthropology Professor Eric Delson was elected to a second two-year term as secretary of the Paleoanthropology Society. ... Distinguished Professor of English Billy Collins is one of three winners of the 2005 New York Mayor's Award for Arts & Culture. The awards were presented on May 23 at a ceremony at Gracie Mansion, attended by Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin and Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission Chair Agnes Gund. The awards are given to individuals and organizations in recognition of outstanding contributions to the cultural vitality of New York City. Also receiving the award were theatre legend Chita Rivera (who visited Lehman earlier this semester) and famed jazz musician Wynton Marsalis. These individuals, the Mayor said, "exemplify what the arts can do for New York City." ... Next spring, Professor and Chemistry Chair Manfred Philipp will travel to Portugal on a Fulbright grant to teach a course in bioinformatics at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon. Bioinformatics is the science of using computers to analyze and manage biological data. In addition to teaching, he will conduct research on protein-ligand interactions, using computer-based methods.
