Nursing Professor Also a Writer and Poet

Salley Anne, a New Opera
Salley Anne, a New Opera
Professor Margaret Yard is not only skilled in nursing, which she teaches at Lehman, but is also building a growing portfolio as a writer and poet. Her latest work–the libretto for a new opera, Sally Anne–premiered in this year's Tribeca New Music Festival.

The opera, by composer Michael Sahl, was performed by the New York Art Ensemble on Sunday, April 24, at the Flea Theatre as part of an opera workshop. It presents a powerful story of escape from a childhood of horror into a world of the absurd.

As a writer and poet, Professor Yard has had readings in various venues, including the Heritage Foundation, NuYorican Poets Café, Bowery Café, ABC No Rio, Phebes, the Center for Cultural Studies and WBAI-FM. Her poetry has been published in such magazines as And Then, Tamarind and Radical Press and will appear in the upcoming book A History of Silence; Poetry of Margaret Yard.

Professor Yard has also supplied the book and lyrics for John Grace Ratner, an opera in one act, which has been performed by American Opera Productions and Theatre for the New City; "Blood Ferry," for voice and piano, performed by the Music Studio, CUNY Network; and "Brasil," "Os Velos," "Last Day Years End," and "Rogerian Fugue."
