The Lehman College Foundation will host a reception to honor internationally acclaimed composer John Corigliano, who is a Distinguished Professor of Music at Lehman. Proceeds will establish the "Corigliano Music Scholarships at Lehman College" to enable talented and deserving music students to complete their education.

The reception will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Kaplan Penthouse of the Rose Building at Lincoln Center. Selections of Prof. Corigliano's works will be performed by some of his friends, students and colleagues, including The Elements Quartet, the Bacon Brothers and Judy Kaye, as well as surprise guests. The program will interweave performances of Prof. Corigliano's music with commentary by distinguished colleagues and a short multimedia presentation on his life as a composer and teacher.

A recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, the Grawemeyer Award, the Academy Award for Distinguished Composition in Film, and two Grammy Awards, Prof. Corigliano is regarded as one of the world's leading composers of orchestral, chamber, operatic and film music. He is also considered a master teacher both at Lehman and at the Juilliard School, where he also teaches. Many of his former Lehman students, such as Michael Bacon of the Bacon Brothers, have moved on to successful careers as composers and performers.

"John Corigliano has not only taught and inspired a generation of students at Lehman College," said Dr. Ricardo R. Fernández, Lehman's president, "he has also been committed throughout his career to the people of New York and to advancing our public system of education. This system has produced extraordinary artists, as well as many hundreds of notable scholars and scientists. In honoring John, by establishing the Corigliano Music Scholarships at Lehman College, we also honor his dedication to supporting and encouraging future composers, performers and teachers."

Friends from both the academic and musical worlds are joining in the event. To date, the Benefit Committee includes Schuyler Chapin, Ron Daniel, Peter and Brooke Duchin, Susan Feder, Henry Fogel, Mary Rodgers Guettel, Jerry Junkin, Louis Miano, Fran Richard, Susan Rose and Jonathan Sheffer.
