Immigrant Experience Essay Contest for Lehman Students

Immigrants
Over the course of the last academic year, the Library has held a number of lectures and discussions celebrating the immigrant experience, including a series of events in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nobel prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer.

Now through May 16, the Lehman Library is holding an essay contest on the topic of the immigrant experience. Lehman students are invited to share their stories of coming to the United States and assimilating into the American culture. Only registered Lehman students may enter. Essays must be dropped off in Room 213 by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 16.

The first-prize winner will receive $100, the second prize is $50, and third- and fourth-prize winners will each receive $25. Essays must be 6-10 pages long and double-spaced. Judges include faculty from the various divisions and departments of the College.

Questions to consider:

  • What have been some of the difficulties of assimilating into the American culture?
  • What has been easy?
  • How have you changed?
  • How have you, in turn, changed your environment?

Funding for the Isaac Bashevis Singer Centennial Celebration was provided through a grant from the Library of America, the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
