Professor Bergman's Geography Textbook Receives National Award

Introduction to Geography: People, Places and Environment
The Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA) has awarded its prestigious 2005 "Texy" Textbook Excellence Award to Introduction to Geography: People, Places and Environment (3rd Ed.) by Professor Edward Bergman (Environmental, Geographical & Geological Sciences). Professor Bergman will receive the award at the association's annual convention banquet in June.

Coauthored by Professor William H. Renwick of Miami University and published by Prentice Hall, the book helps introductory students apply what they learn in geography class to an understanding of the world around them. It emphasizes both scientific and humanistic analytical skills and weaves the theme of human-environmental interaction throughout the content.

New to the third edition are:

  • Demonstrations of new applications of GIS and GPS in physical geography, including urban planning, registration of urban and rural landholding, and farming techniques;
  • Coverage of the aging of the human population and the ramifications of this development in rich and poor countries; and
  • Expanded discussion of Islam in Europe and its cultural, religious and political impact, the relations between church and state in Islam and in other religions, and the spread of Islamic Sharia law across North Africa, the Near East and Indonesia.

TAA was established in 1987 for those interested in developing and publishing a variety of educational materials, including textbooks, software, videos, monographs, reference books, newsletters and multimedia CD-ROMs. It currently has more than 1,200 members committed to the advancement of text and academic authoring and to the creation of quality educational materials at every level.

Prof. Bergman is the author of seven other books and numerous articles and reviews. He has lectured extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, South America and South Africa and is regularly invited to lecture and hold seminars at universities in London, Dublin, Bologna, Rome, Padua and Copenhagen, as well as at the University of the Bosporus in Istanbul.
