Career Services Offers Job Negotiating Workshop April 1

Interns
Interning is a way of gaining valuable experience.
Getting a job offer is exciting for any job hunter, but it's the negotiation phase of the interview that can make or break the deal. To help students navigate that phase of the job search, the Office of Career Services is offering a workshop on April 1 entitled "The Art of Negotiating." The workshop, which begins at noon in Room 229 of Shuster Hall, is open to students and alumni only.

According to Career Coordinator and workshop leader John Augliera, to get what you want, you have to be willing to ask for it. But the key to a successful interview lies in how and when you ask.

"You never want to bring up the topic of salary yourself," says Augliera. "When the subject does come up, remember that you are offering your skills and services; therefore you have a right to negotiate fair compensation for them."

In any kind of bargaining situation it's important to know what the competition is offering and for how much. Augliera recommends researching the compensation that others are getting who hold the same job title. Know how much you are worth in the marketplace before the interview, and know your skills.

"Usually employers are trying to get the best person for the job at a fair wage, but sometimes below market wage," says Augliera. "You need to know what you want."

He adds that one of the most common mistakes people make is not considering the full compensation package, as well as career opportunities, before accepting or rejecting an offer. Another mistake is not negotiating at all.

"This particular workshop is the first we've offered dealing with the bargaining aspect of interviewing," says Nancy Cintron, director of Career Services. "We realized that a lot of students just are not prepared to negotiate salary and other areas like health benefits."
