Students from Dominican Republic Hold Model United Nations at Lehman College March 18

Provisional Headquarters for United Nations at 1946
The campus on March 25, 1946, the first day of meetings of the UN Security Council. Flags of the original 51 members of the United Nations were raised on flagpoles planted in the grass along the inner rim of the circular driveway that separated the Gym Building from Student Hall (now the Music Building).

Students will travel from the Dominican Republic to attend a Model U.N. on the Lehman campus Friday, March 18. The opening session, which runs from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m., will be held in the Lovinger Theater and is free and open to the public. The keynote address will be given by the Honorable Olara Otunnu, Undersecretary General and Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict.

This is the third in a series of model U.N. events that the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) has recently held in the New York area. The first two were held at Pace University and Manhattanville College. The goal of the event is to establish the basis for a progressive future led by youth, as well as to encourage young people to actively participate in their communities.

In looking forward to the day's sessions, Lehman President Ricardo R. Fernández said that "we are certain this will be an unforgettable experience for the students as well as a tangible contribution to the strengthening and amplification of Dominican participation in issues of global interest."

Lehman has a unique relationship with the United Nations. In 1946, the campus served as the provisional headquarters for the United Nations. The model U.N.'s sessions will be held in some of the same locations as the 1946 U.N. sessions. Violence against women and cloning for the purpose of reproduction are just two of the topics that will be discussed.

The conference is co-sponsored by six organizations and institutions: the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic before the United Nations, United Nations Association of the United States of America's New York Chapter, Lehman College and the CUNY Institute for Dominican Studies. It was made possible by the support of CUNY's Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson.
