Preparation for Teaching and Graduate Study. The undergraduate curricula in classics have been designed to provide a sound foundation both for teaching at any level and graduate study. Students who wish to prepare for secondary school teaching of Latin or Greek should consult their departmental adviser and the Department of Secondary, Adult, and Business Education concerning the certification requirements for New York State and the requirements for teaching a foreign language in secondary school.
Students who intend to pursue graduate studies in English, history, modern foreign languages, philosophy, or linguistics are urged to consider the advisability of electing courses in elementary Latin if they have no previous training in this language.
The Division of Germanic and Slavic Languages offers students the opportunity to study German language and literature, Russian language and literature, and, on occasion, other Slavic languages. A B.A. degree may be earned in German and in Russian.
The department participates in an interdisciplinary major in comparative literature. The department also coordinates "Classics in the Western World" (IDW).
