LYNX:
a text-based hypertext browser for the World Wide Web
Browsing: at the system prompt enter lynx
(if needed, press Enter at Terminal [vt100] prompt)
First time, press O to set options. Record your
own address and create a Bookmark file =personal directory for URLs. See
Setting Bookmarks below. Also choose ISO Latin as character set. Save the
file.
address:
<your username>@alpha.lehman.cuny.edu -- for an ALPHA account.
<your username>@lcvax.lehman.cuny.edu -- for a VAX account.
Links are bold = highlighted.
Keys: Tab or down arrow = select next link, up arrow = select
previous link, Enter or right arrow = go to selected link, left arrow =
go to previously viewed link; spacebar = see next screen, B = back to previous
screen.
On the first screen, press Tab OR spacebar OR down arrow to select something.
When you find something you are interested in, press Enter or right arrow
to see more or read.
When you find your file, press D or P to download (or read)
the file.
You will see the 3 options "Save to a local file./Mail the file to yourself./Print
to the screen."
Mail the file to yourself, print it--or extract it from Mail to your directory,
then download to diskette.
Don't use the third option. Press Z to cancel transfer in progress.
If the file is binary, you can press = to see its URL. Then note
down the URL, use something else such as FTP, set to binary, to download.
When you find a place you want to return to, press = to see its linkname
and filename.
Press A to add a bookmark (see below).
Press left arrow to return to the previous page, B to go back
up to previous screen.
Other LYNX keys: Help, Options, Print, Go,
Mainmenu,
Quit,
Backspace
for last command.
/ to search, \ source/view (toggle to see/not see html code).
To clear or refresh screen, press Ctrl-r, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-w.
Quitting LYNX: type Q then Y to confirm. This returns
you to the system prompt. Log off.
Accessing a site directly from the system prompt: enter lynx <site>
eg. lynx http://www.lehman.cuny.edu for the Lehman homepage
(now, eg., Tab to select Academic Departments, press Enter, Tab to Languages
and Literatures,
Enter, Tab to Index to our pages, Enter. Tab to your selection, Enter.
If you like this, save it to your bookmark file: press a to add,
L
to link it.
Accessing a site directly if you are in Lynx already:
type g for goto, then enter the URL (without typing lynx first).
eg. http://www.lehman.cuny.edu/depts/langlit/default1.htm -- our
homepage.

Setting and using bookmarks:
When you are at a file you would like to come back to, type A for
add. You will be prompted to add this to your personal bookmark file by
typing L for link.
The next time you start LYNX, type V for view. You will see your
personal selection of sites.
Select the desired site and press Enter.
To delete a bookmark, select the URL (=site or file) and press R
to remove it.
Quitting LYNX:
type Q then Y to confirm. This returns you to the system
prompt. Then log off.
If you are stuck in lynx, press Ctrl-c to exit.
