File Transfer To/From your account Using FTP

Use this if you have an Internet Provider or a direct connection to the campus backbone. Note: all examples below assume you have an Alpha account. Adapt them for a Unix or Vax account.

NEEDED:

1) a direct connection to the Internet via campus "backbone" or from an Internet provider, such as AOL or IDT

2) FTP software on your computer: a utility for quick file transfer (the initials stand for File Transfer Protocol). If you use good Communications software, such as ProComm, you already have FTP. OR: GET WS_FTP: we use this here, the Lite versions are free for education. If you need FTP, see below.

USING FTP:

With a direct Connection to campus backbone: Just open ws_ftp (Navigator is not running).

At home, with Internet Provider: first connect to the Internet. Minimize the browser window. Open ws_ftp.

Select alpha as your Session Profile. Click OK. (You may need to click Connect but probably not.)
If you saved your password, you get connected to the Alpha. If not, you are prompted for your username and password.
The left half of your screen is your PC, the right half your Alpha disc.
Click on ASCII or Binary.
Select a directory and select a file on the left, click on the right arrow to copy it to the right.
Or vice versa.
This is very fast.
When done, close the connection and the window: click Close, Exit.
Minimize all windows, maximize your browser: you are back on the Internet.

Voilà!

Download, install, configure WS_FTP:

Connect to the Internet, search Yahoo for ws_ftp, find the right version for your computer, e.g., Mac, Windows 3.X or 95, download it -- (and the instructions, or print those). Disconnect from Internet.

In Windows, close all applications except Program Manager.

Open File Manager.
Create 2 new directories, e.g. c:\transfer, c:\temp5. Move the ws_ftp.zip file into c:\temp5.
Go to c:\temp5, doubleclick the ws_ftp file to explode it. Press F5 to refresh the window. You now have lots of files.
Close File Manager. Click File menu in Program Manager, Run, Browse. Look for setup.exe or install.exe, doubleclick it. Ws_ftp gets installed into a new group.

HOUSEKEEPING:

You can now erase all files in c:\temp5. You can also move all icons in the new WS_FTP group into your Online group and delete the ws_ftp group.

FIRST TIME: CREATE SESSION PROFILE

Open ws_ftp: doubleclick its icon.

Session Profile: new, enter data, save as alpha
Host Name: alpha.lehman.cuny.edu
Host Type: Automatic detect

At home, you can add User ID: your alpha login name--and Password: your alpha password. Click on Save password.

You may also want to enter something in
Initial directories:
Remote Host (you can leave this blank)
Local PC:
e.g., c:\transfer -- if you created this subdirectory earlier.
Click Advanced:
Connection Retry 0, Network Timeout 65, Remote Port 21, OK.

Save this profile as alpha.

! If you open and don't use the utility, click on Cancel before Exit ! or you have to restart Windows !
