Welcome to the Counseling Center

The Counseling Center at Lehman College is a safe place for students to talk about any concerns they may have. Services are free and confidential and provided in a safe environment in which students may address personal issues that may be inhibiting them from attaining their academic goal. All students are treated with respect and are seen as individuals with unique strengths.

Our Mission

The mission of the Counseling Center is to assist students with emotional, developmental and psychological concerns that may be affecting their personal and academic growth. Our goal is to assist student to learn to cope with the challenges of college and life in a productive, healthy manner.

Our Services

The Counseling Center serves the Lehman College community by providing a range of services to meet student’s need:

  • Individual counseling
  • Crisis intervention
  • Study Skills Counseling
  • Groups and Workshops
  • Referral to services within Lehman College (e.g., academic advisement, career services, tutoring, health services, student life etc.) and to mental health and social services in their community.

Session Limit/Limitation of Services

The Counseling Center does not have a predetermined limit for the number of visits a student may use during their academic years at Lehman College, however, our services are time-limited.

Counselors use a brief counseling approach with the following characteristics and goals:

  • It is time-limited to a maximum of six visits if it is recommended for this student. If longer term therapy is recommended the students is referred to their community mental health provider.
  • It is solution-focused and referrals are provided as needed.
  • It is focused on specific issues that affect academic functioning, and lead to difficulties.
  • It is active with both the student and counselor are participating in the process.

Students who require more visits or longer-term therapy are referred for services in the community. Students should check our community resource list and their medical insurance.

Crisis Intervention and Emergency Services: The Counseling Center provides walk-in, crisis intervention and emergency services for students who feel they need to be seen immediately.
