Radio Jarocho plays son jarocho
Radio Son Jarocho takes the rowdy, upbeat, and at times melancholic, music of the countryside of Veracruz, Mexico -- and mixes it with the sounds of New York’s urban life. A mix of Spanish, West African, and Indigenous music, dance, and poetry, son jarocho is customarily played in the fandango, a community celebration where people gather to play, sing, and dance. Radio Jarocho has pioneered the promotion and preservation of son jarocho and the fandango on the East Coast, creating a modern sound that captures the spirit of the traditional style. The group has been featured in La Casita at Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, Celebrate Brooklyn, Joe's Pub, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the World Music Institute, Harvard University, the UPenn Museum, and the Graduate Center. Radio Jarocho's members have also helped build communities of son jarocho practitioners in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Additionally, the group recently released a new album, Rios del norte y sur (2018), with master son jarocho musician Zenen Zeferino. The new album features traditional sones jarochos and new compositions. Monday, April 8, 2019, 12:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall (3rd. floor Music Building). Admission is free but donations are welcome. Information: (718) 960-8247, music@lehman.cuny.edu, or visit lehman.edu/music.
