COACHE Faculty Survey spacer 2019 Excellence in Teaching Awards
Each year Lehman College recognizes a full-time and a part-time faculty member for Excellence in Teaching at our commencement ceremony. This is a call for nominations for these awards. Any full-time or part-time faculty with the following qualities is eligible:
  • Exhibits outstanding teaching ability
  • Consistently demonstrates command of an area of study
  • Displays an ability to transmit knowledge to others
  • Encourages a love of and passion for learning in his/her students
  • Shows extraordinary concern for students and other members of the Lehman community
  • Makes a substantial difference in students' academic and/or personal lives
  • Brings respect to the teaching profession
Please send all nominating letters to the Office of the Provost no later than Monday, March 18, 2019. Nominating letters must address the qualities referenced above.

Join NYC Open Data Week March 1-9, 2019
Open Data Week is organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Program and BetaNYC. This week-long event series takes place during the first week of March to celebrate New York City’s Open Data Law, which was signed into law on March 7, 2012. The goal of Open Data Week 2019 is to raise awareness about NYC Open Data, a free data resource.

Introduction to Open Data Sources and Tools Workshop
This workshop will introduce several Open Data sources, with a focus on New York City-specific sources. Attendees will learn how and why cities like New York publish Open Data - and how to use Open Data to gather new insights about how our city functions. Tools such as Microsoft Excel and Carto will be introduced, so attendees can learn how to conduct their own analyses of Open Data sources. Join us for a discussion on how to leverage city data to better allocate resources for individuals, community organizations, and small businesses who need it. CUNY and SUNY are once again collaborating on a showcase of OER developments across New York City and State. Amanda Coolidge, Senior Manager of Open Education at BCcampus, will offer the Keynote address. Coolidge leads BC’s Open Textbook Project - as well as Open Education initiatives in British Columbia, Canada. The program will include a student panel, faculty panel, as well as multiple breakout sessions featuring the work of CUNY and SUNY faculty. Register your attendance. Lehman Chamber Players Recital
Beethoven’s Sonata in C Major for Cello and Piano, and two works by Brahms: Songs for Baritone, Cello and Piano, as well as his dramatic Trio in C Minor for Violin, Cello, and Piano. Artists: critically acclaimed violinist Paul Roczek, Professor of Violin at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria; cellist Hamilton Berry, a graduate of the Juilliard School; baritone Aram Tchobanian, Director of the Joy in Singing Competition; and Diana Mittler-Battipaglia, Professor of Music and Choral Director at Lehman College. Voice Masterclass
Maestro Gregory Buchalter, cover conductor and voice coach at the Metropolitan Opera, will give a masterclass in voice. Buchalter is also artistic director and conductor of Opera Fairbanks, and Washington's Opera Camerata; and has been guest conductor at Opera Las Vegas, Savonlinna Opera, Finland, New Opera World Festival in Moscow, Mediterranean Opera Festival in Sicily, and Varna International Festival in Bulgaria, among others. COACHE Faculty Survey of Job Satisfaction
CUNY will participate in the Spring 2019 COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey. On Monday, February 11th, Provost Nwosu announced the launch of the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Survey at Lehman. Completing the COACHE survey will aid CUNY in addressing overall concerns, retain and attract quality scholars and teachers, and improve overall faculty work satisfaction. La Gran Parada Dominicana del Bronx, Inc.
Call for applications. La Grana Parada Dominicana del Bronx, Inc. offers a scholarship program for the benefit of students who attend one of the three CUNY colleges in the Bronx--Lehman College, Bronx Community College, and Hostos Community College. The scholarship of up to $1,000 will be awarded to undergraduate students who are currently registered for the Spring 2019 semester.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be of Dominican descent
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student (12 or more credits)
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2018-19 academic year
  • Must attend all events held by the organization including the Bronx Dominican Parade
  • Any community service locally and/or abroad is desirable

CUNY MATH CHALLENGE - $1,000 Grand Prize
The CUNY Math Challenge seeks to identify and reward CUNY's best math talent. Students are invited to compete for scholarship/fellowship awards ranging from $100 up to $1,000. How it Works: The first step is to register for the first online round. Registration closes March 13, 2019. The questions for this round will be posted on Monday, March 4, and will be open through Sunday, March 17, 2019. Problems range in difficulty from the “not easy” to “pretty tough.” No knowledge of advanced mathematics is needed. Students with the best scores in the first round will be invited to an in-person exam to be administered on Sunday, April 7, 2019. Qualifying students will compete for the scholarship/fellowship awards. Winners will be publicly recognized at an event in mid-May. Register here.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES PROGRAM
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), offers paid summer internships for qualified undergraduate students to conduct research projects in biology with BMCC scientists. Students receive a $4,600 stipend, $1,200 housing allowance, a MetroCard, and daily meals. In addition to hands-on research, students participate in a series of weekly meetings at which they discuss their research, present informal progress reports, and engage in discussions regarding scientific research and research career opportunities. At the end of the program, students deliver oral presentations of their work and prepare research papers.

All REU students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the U.S. Students must be entering or continuing in an Associate or Baccalaureate degree program following the 2019 summer internship. As part of the National Science Foundation’s commitment to broadening participation in STEM fields, we especially encourage students who come from community colleges, undergraduate-only institutions, and minority-serving institutions to apply.

Environmental Conservation Scholarship Funded by Theodore Gordon Flyfishers
The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers Founders Fund Scholarship is offered annually, in the name of the TGF founders, to a single recipient who has demonstrated excellence and outstanding dedication to environmental conservation through a field of study that falls within an environmental field of a school or department. Areas may include: ecology; hydrology; biology; fisheries; natural resource management; zoology; environmental studies, science, law or policy.
