Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The IACUC Review Process at Lehman College

Initial Review Process

  • Submit an APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL FOR PROJECTS INVOLVING VERTEBRATE ANIMALS to the IACUC office, located in Shuster, Rm. 303. Electronic submissions of applications are acceptable; however, a signed hard copy must be delivered to Shuster, Rm. 303 for filing. In addition, each investigator and their key personnel must complete CITI Animal Subject Training and certification must be submitted to the IACUC office in Shuster, Rm. 303.
  • The IACUC committee reviews the protocol to determine if it falls under designated member review, which can be done by e-mail. The protocol is initially sent to the veterinarian, who is given seven days to complete the review and return it to the IACUC office. Any comments along with the protocol are then forwarded to the remainder of the committee for their review. If no further comments are received and there is no request for a full committee review, a letter requesting clarifications and/or stipulations is sent to the investigator or if a recommendation to approve outright has been made, a Verification of Approval is sent.  This category includes continuing reviews, previously approved protocols that have been resubmitted or identical protocols submitted to different funding agencies, protocols with no direct animal use, e.g. funds will be used for salary support only (on a previously approved protocol), or use of shared animal products or slaughterhouse materials. Please note that every effort is made to move this process along; however, the speed of completion is dependent upon your speed of response to revisions.
  • If full committee review is needed, your proposal will be reviewed at a scheduled meeting. You will be informed of the IACUC’s meeting date, time, and location. You are encouraged to be available to answer any questions the committee may have during the meeting. If minor revisions are needed, your proposal will be approved awaiting your revisions. If substantive revisions are needed, your proposal needs to be revised and resubmitted for review at the IACUC’s next meeting.
