The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant) Program is a federal program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to graduate students. Recipients must agree to fulfill a service obligation as a full-time teacher in a high-need field, at a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income families (federal Title I designated neighborhoods).* What is a “High-Need Field”? “High-need field” refers to instructional subject areas for which there are teacher shortages. The TEACH Grant Program (TG) is intended to support the training of students to address the teacher shortages of certain federally defined instructional subject areas. The following Lehman College programs prepare students for teacher certification in those federally designated subject areas. • (13.0201) Bilingual Education • (13.1302) Elementary Education (grades 1-6) • (13.1210) Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2) • (13.1330) Foreign Language Education (Spanish) • (13.1315) Literacy Studies • (13.1311) Mathematics Education • (13.1316) Science Education • (13.1015) Special Education: Early Childhood (birth-grade 2) • (13.1017) Special Education: Childhood (grades 1-6) • (13.1019) Special Education: Adolescent (grades 7-12) • (13.1401) TESOL What are the TEACH Grant Program’s Eligibility Requirements? • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. • Complete online TEACH Grant Entrance Counseling* and an Agreement to Serve (ATS)*contract. • Complete the current year’s FAFSA* federal financial aid application. • Be a matriculated graduate student in one of Lehman College’s federally designated high-need teacher education programs. • Achieve and maintain a cumulative undergraduate and graduate GPA of at least 3.25 or submit proof of scoring above the 75th percentile on a national college admissions test (SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, MCAT, GMAT, DAT). • Master Degree applicants, who are retired teachers with certification in a high-need field or who are current teachers in a high need field, are exempt from the GPA and national admissions test requirements. • Enroll for coursework necessary for a teaching career in a high-need instructional area. How is the Service Obligation Completed? To complete the service obligation, recipients must teach for at least four (4) academic years within eight (8) calendar years of completing their program of study. Such service must be rendered as a fully certified teacher. Failure to complete the service obligation will cause all received TEACH Grant funds to be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Such a loan would have to be repaid to the U.S. Department of Education with interest accrued from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement. How do I get admitted to the TEACH Grant Program? 1. Be in compliance with the above TEACH Grant Program eligibility requirements. 2. Fill out and submit a Lehman College TEACH Grant Application to the Lehman College Graduate Admissions Office, Shuster Hall, room 150. 3. Submit official academic transcripts of all previous college work to the L. C. Graduate Admissions Office. 4.
