WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY TODAY?

Today almost all of
us
are geographers,
whether or not we call ourselves that.
Geographers include
people who plan the
need for future schools,
who develop real estate, who manage parklands, forests, or water supplies,
or who plan road tours
for rock groups; journalists, diplomats, executives of multinational
corporations, and farmers, who choose which crop
to plant on the basis of
world markets. Geography
is one of the most diverse fields of academic studies,
so it offers an introduction to a unique breadth of
eventual careers. Geographers’ studies
of Where? What?
Why? And Why There?
prompt thoughts
about “how ought?” Geographers’ expertise
can not only help us understand the world, but also help us improve it.
