On November 16th 2006, Audra Watson, Deputy Director of the NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence, did a presentation for Lehman faculty in our student teaching/internship/ and fellows programs. The presentation discussed the University of California Santa Cruz Professional Teaching Standards. These standards have been adopted by the NYC Department of Education for teacher induction as well as for ongoing professional development. These are the same standards that are being used in our host schools, which are working collaboratively with our Teacher Academy Students in helping them to acquire the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to be effective teachers.
If you are an aspiring teacher, a cooperating teacher, a teacher enrolled in a Master's Program, or a teacher educator, these standards are an important tool for self-reflection and goal setting with respect to improved teaching and learning.
