This is a copy of an E-mail that I sent on
Sunday, July 7, 2002 to the 15 participants and the other teacher-consultants of "Language and the Internet." I invite all to read this message
-- and follow the links to the student samples -- as one
introduction to this Web site.
Wow! There's only hours left before we begin our work together this summer. I'm sending this message to you to (once again) introduce you to some of the thinking behind the Web site we will be using for the Advanced Institute.

Don't feel like you have to respond to this E-mail now. We'll look at the student samples listed below on Tuesday. If you have time, however, please take a look at the work that is linked here. What you will find are four examples of one student's work on the Internet. In each, the student, Anna uses a different kind of Netspeak to respond to reading that she has done. On Tuesday we will collaboratively describe the language we see in each of these samples of student work.
So... with this E-mail, I invite you to begin your exploration of the Advanced Institute's Web site. There's probably no better way to begin to understand the theory behind the design of this site -- and behind the design of the Advanced Institute -- than by looking at student work that has been produced in different Internet environments.
This is the work that a ninth grader, Anna, did this year in response to her reading.

Please let me emphasize that we are not expecting you to have analyzed these documents before we begin in a few hours. But if you can take a peak before Tuesday, that would be great!
I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!
