It's 3:00 in the morning and Aunt Harriet can't sleep a wink. She is remembering her husband Sam, now long dead, who took her to Coney Island, bought her a candy apple and sang Moonlight in Vermont before proposing.. Sam and Harriet were married for 64 years, never had any children, lived quietly in Brooklyn and saved their money. One day Sam died. Aunt Harriet grieved for her lost husband, folded up his clothes, adopted a cat and invested all their life savings in the stock market.
Now Aunt Harriet switches on the light and moves towards the kitchen. She plans to warm up some milk. On the way, her head begins to pound and the room gets fuzzy. When Aunt Harriet wakes she is in Coney Island Hospital. Sophie, her sister, is standing next to her bed, pushing a bunch of lilacs into a vase. Sophie turns and smiles. She explains to Aunt Harriet that she has had a heart attack. Aunt Harriet needs to go to a nursing home. But Aunt Harriet doesn't understand and shakes her head. Clutching her blanket to her chest, Aunt Harriet talks to the lilacs in the vase. She says, "Yes, Sam. I will go back to the Lenox House Hotel in Martha's Vineyard and find your box."
