New Collaborations and Partnerships
Writing and Technology: The New York City Writing Project is in the first year of a two-year partnership with the NYC Department of Education’s Queens Office of Instructional Technology and Districts 27 and 29. This work, part of a Federal Title IID technology grant, focuses on building children’s literacy through the creation of nonfiction graphic novels.
Mathematics Education: The New York City Mathematics Project is a partner with District 30 in the New York State Education Department’s Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant Program, Title IIB. The purpose of the grant is to develop a community of life-long mathematics learners, and to build capacity within that community for continuous and sustainable growth in learning and teaching mathematics. The NYCMP is offering seminars three times a year focusing on NYS content and process strands, mathematics connections to cultural institutions, and the development of a website by each participant. A new NYSED MSP proposal for the next three years, which includes the work of the NYCMP, has been submitted.
School Partnerships: In 2009-2010 the NYC Mathematics Project is working with 25 New York City schools. The NYC Writing Project is working with 19 New York City schools. Most of these are multi-year collaborations.
State Writing Project Network: NYCWP is participating in the development of the Empire State Writing Project Network (ESWPN) an association of nine National Writing Project sites from across New York State. The most recent meeting was held in February 2010 at Canisius College in Buffalo. Teacher-consultants Debra Freeman and Joe Bellacero represented NYCWP.
Lehman Community Garden: Students and teachers at the Adult Learning Center are hatching plans to continue their participation in Lehman’s community vegetable garden this year. Working in collaboration with Lehman’s Health Sciences Department and staff from a variety of college departments and programs, the ALC played a lead role in initiating and maintaining the garden during the 2009 growing season. Last summer, a group of ALC students were immersed in food-related activities, tending and harvesting the garden while taking a nutrition and healthy cooking class provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension using the Health Science’s Department kitchen facilities.
