The Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College advances urban education reform by strengthening literacy and mathematics teaching and by supporting teachers as key educational decision-makers. We conduct professional development, program evaluation, and research projects in educational settings ranging from schools to colleges and community organizations.

In the NYC Writing Project's Elementary Leadership Program, 11 elementary school teachers participated in a study group on incorporating inquiry-based literacy learning in their classrooms. Read their publication here.

In the ILS’s Youth Education Scholars project, practitioners in after-school youth programs explored resources and activities to connect literacy education with the goals and identities of their programs and youth. Read their publication here.

The NYC Mathematics Project is a partner in Mathematics Teacher Transformation Institutes (MTTI), a new NSF-funded program for teachers in Bronx middle and high schools.
