Family and Community Literacy
The Institute for Literacy Studies engages in Family and Community Literacy projects that promote and support literacy education in settings other than schools. Our work in this area involves adult, young adult, and child learners, including parents, care givers, and staff of community-based organizations; is based on a broad understanding of how people acquire and develop language and literacy; and places the social context of individual lives as a central element in the educational process. By helping people participate more fully in the practical affairs of the world, assume a voice in public dialogue, and satisfy a personal desire to learn, literacy education in settings other than schools has the power to transform individual, family, and community aspirations.
