Services The Adult Learning Center is a direct service program that offers free classes to community residents who: The ALC provides day and evening classes for adult basic education (BE) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) as well as preparation for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Evening students attend two "core" classes per week, while most day students attend three "core" classes from 3-4 hours per day. Many adult learners also come to school one or two additional days each week for classes in math, computers, office skills, and English conversation, or to take advantage of our independent study structure. Annually, about 800 students participate in ALC classes, with roughly equal numbers of Basic Education, GED, and ESOL students. Each year, from 60 to 80 students pass the GED exam and receive high school equivalency diplomas. Increasingly, we have tried to build connections between the different types and levels of classes we offer. The relationship of adult basic education, GED work, and ESOL classes is complex. BE and GED share a continuum of content and mastery. ESOL students may be highly educated in their first language or require basic education as well as English instruction. Upper level ESOL students, therefore, are often integrated into BE and even GED activities. Some pass the GED exam and move on to college. Our elective activities such as office skills, computers, and math often include BE, GED, and ESOL students. top of the page |
