Welcome to the Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education's web site.
As a faculty we are committed to preparing competent, qualified, and caring teachers for diverse urban settings.
This commitment is expressed in detail in the Division of Education's philosophical document entitled Lehman Urban Teacher Education (LUTE).
The themes of the LUTE form the basis of our four programs leading to New York State teacher certification, and they help focus our work with teacher candidates, students, parents, schools, and other community organizations to enhance learning, recognizing that early education is the basis for later learning.
The Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education prepares students for initial/professional New York State certification (birth through 6th grade) to teach children at the early childhood and childhood levels, including children whose primary languages and cultures are not English, and collaborates in the preparation of teachers of special subjects (art, music) from pre-K through 6th grade schools at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Lehman gives teachers a focus on philosophy, trends, curriculum, methods, materials, and research in the field. The bilingual extension option adds the possibility of initial certification with an emphasis on the bilingual/bicultural child.
Courses of study in both undergraduate and graduate programs provide an educational model based on child development and child study principles, New York State Education Department standards and core curriculum, and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards as described by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Lehman Offers Quality, Convenience, and Support
The Division of Education at Lehman College offers quality, convenience, affordability, and ongoing professional support. Our Early Childhood and Childhood undergraduate and graduate programs are comprehensive, providing students with both theory and hands-on techniques for instruction and classroom management, with emphasis on pre-K through Grade 2.
Our faculty are recognized for their scholarship and research and for their work with Bronx and suburban schools, where they address professional development needs and serve as resources for teachers. We strive to make classes interesting, use active learning strategies, and assign projects that have direct bearing on the day-to-day experiences of early childhood teachers.
The New York Times has called Lehman the "most attractive of the CUNY colleges with some of its finest facilities." Our Information Technology Center is a pioneer in the field of distance-learning. Our Library has an extensive collection in Early Childhood and Childhood Education. Lehman students have free access to The APEX, a center for sports and fitness. And for the many Lehman students who drive, convenient campus parking is available in attended lots.
Lehman Campus Offers Cultural Opportunities for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Our campus is a regional center for the visual and performing arts, recreation, and fitness through the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Lovinger Theater, Art Gallery, and The APEX. Lehman students have opportunities to attend theatrical productions, concerts, lectures, films, and other cultural events throughout the school year. They may also participate in a wide variety of clubs, professional organizations, and intramural athletic teams.
To Find Out if You're Eligible for Financial Aid
Graduate students at Lehman College may be eligible for financial aid through various state, federal, and College programs, including the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), CUNY Graduate Tuition Waiver, the Federal Perkins Loan Program, the Federal Stafford Loan Program, the Federal College Work-Study Program, and Lehman College Foundation grants.
