Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions about ALC.

What is Adult Basic Education (ABE)?
The Adult Basic Education is a program which provides basic reading and writing instruction to students who read and write at the beginning level through Intermediate Reading  & Writing.

What is English as a Second Language (ESL/ESOL)?
English as a Second Language is a program which provides English instruction, levels 1-5 (day) and levels 1-3 (evening).

What is GED?
GED stands for General Educational Development.  It is a program which provides classes in preparation for the high school equivalency examination.

How much does it cost to attend classes at your program?
The Adult Learning Center offers only free classes; therefore, students are not required to pay any fees.

How old does a student have to be to attend classes in your program?
Seventeen years and over.

How does someone enroll in this program?
To enroll in the Adult Learning Center, you can either call (718) 960-8807 or walk-in to our office and place your name on our waiting list. Information about classes are not sent in the mail.

How long is the waiting list?
ABE has a 4-to-6- month waiting list, and ESL has a 2-year waiting list.
(The above wait period may vary depending on space availability on each cycle. It is advisable to call for an update on wait period)

After being placed on the waiting list, what is the next step?
Every cycle we call students from the waiting lists. We invite them on an open-house where they meet staff members and students from the program, and are oriented/screened for placement. Help is always available to assist students in this process.

How long are the class sessions?
Day classes run from 9:00 A.M. - 12:30 AM, 3 days a week. Evening classes run from 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. (Check class schedule for specific days and classes).

Can I attend classes more than three days?
Yes. The ALC offers elective classes on Wednesdays and Fridays. The student has to be registered in a regular class before attending an elective class.
