The Jaime Lucero Mexican Studies Institute at CUNY offers DACA Grants
In the wake of the recent Presidential election, we are learning about the President-elect's plan for his first 100 days. He has said he intends to cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama. This puts in danger President Obama’s executive action known as DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This policy allows certain undocumented young people who came to the United States as children to receive protection from deportation and work permits. As of June 30, 2016, there were 1.3 million beneficiaries of this program, which includes many Becari@s, members of our staff, other CUNY students, and members of our larger community.
It has come to our attention that many DACA beneficiaries who qualify for a renewal are postponing the process due to a lack of funding. With DACA's uncertain future, we want to be able to assist anyone who qualifies to renew their application prior to inauguration day on January 20th, when the new President-elect takes office.
While we do not know if the new president will revoke DACA immediately, or simply let it expire, we feel it is worth the gamble to try to give DACA recipients the possibility of another two years of its protection and benefits. In keeping with the recommendations of many leading immigration law firms and our own CUNY Citizenship Now!, we will support students who are renewing DACA. We do not recommend and will not support new applications for DACA to be submitted at this time.
Important to note:
Please note that if we grant you funding and for any reason it is not utilized, you will be responsible for returning all funds to the Institute.
Our statement about the 2016 election results:
At the Jaime Lucero Mexican Studies Institute at CUNY we are still processing the outcome of the 2016 Presidential Election. For so many of our students, faculty and staff, the election results have produced powerful feelings of shock, grief, and fear.
In his campaign, Donald Trump insulted Mexicans first, but he did not stop there. We learned about his demeaning and violent ideas about immigrants, Muslims, African-Americans, women and many more groups. The fact that he was elected in spite of having revealed these hateful and destructive ideas and alliances makes us fear for our families, our country and our future.
We are still processing the event and want to encourage all who read this to take the time they need and support each other. Some people are ready to fight and plan the next steps in the struggle for human rights, for immigrant rights, for equality across race, religion, gender and sexuality. But not everyone is ready yet and we should give each other support and time to grieve the loss of the idea we had of this country.
We are gathering information about the implications of this election for our students and their families. Our space is available to anyone who needs support or a safe place to process these events. We send much love and solidarity to all of those who may be affected by this.
