    Basic Microsoft Applications

    Using the industry-standard Microsoft Office Professional Suite, the Basic Microsoft Applications program focuses on mastering Windows and the three primary Office applications. These courses meet the needs of students with a wide variety of career interests including administrative support positions, finance and information management and also helps prepare them for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams. Students may register for individual courses or complete the certificate program.



    Desktop Publishing, Graphics and Web Design

    Students learn the basic principles of effective composition and organization of text and graphics for print and for electronic media with a special emphasis on publication on the World Wide Web. Students may register for individual courses or complete the certificate program.

    A+ Computer Technician Program CISCO Certified Network Associate Program

    Courses offered through the Academy benefit students just entering the workforce, those changing careers, those seeking to advance in their current IT careers by acquiring new skills and for high school and college students preparing for higher education opportunities in computer science or engineering.

    A+ Computer Technician Program

    The goal of this program is to prepare students for entry-level IT positions. In addition, the curriculum is designed to help students prepare for the CompTIA A+ certification examinations which measure the skills required for entry-level computer service technicians. The A+ Computer Technician Program is also excellent preparation for more advanced IT-industry certifications such as those from CISCO and Microsoft and for study in computer science and engineering at the college level.

    * CIP120 Advance Microcomputer Concepts: A+Computer Technician Program
    The A+ Computer Technician Program covers the fundamentals of computer hardware and software and helps prepare students for entry level jobs in information technology. The program also helps prepare students for the CompTIA A+ certification examinations that measure the skills of computer technicians (see http://www.comptia.org for further information on the exams) and for more advanced IT-industry certifications such as those from CISCO and Microsoft.

    Topics include: installation, maintenance, configuration and troubleshooting of computer hardware and operating systems; safe lab practice and tool use; computer assembly and disassembly; the boot process; installation and configuration of portable devices and peripherals, i.e. printers and scanners; introduction to networking; and the types, consequences and prevention of security threats. Customer service orientation and communication skills are emphasized throughout.

    CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

    The CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is the first level of CISCO’s career certifications. The CCNA prepares students to fulfill the job requirements of network technicians, network administration and network engineers. The complete CCNA curriculum is taught by the Network Academy in four courses (CCNA 1-4). Basic Networking: CCNA 1 is a vendor-neutral foundation course in networking emphasizing basic principles that apply equally to CISCO and non-CISCO networks. The course should be of particular interest to students preparing for College-level study in computer science and engineering and students currently enrolled in such programs who would like to supplement their college work with a practical, hands-on, component.

    *CIP225 Basic Networking: CCNA 1
    Students are introduced to the architecture, functions and components of the Internet and other computer networks. Topics include basic principles of communication in networks; definition and function of network protocols and network models (e.g., OSI); communication layers in network models; addressing and naming schemes; subnet masks; Ethernet concepts; basic cabling and network design; and basic router and switch configuration. Working on state-of-the-art CISCO hardware, students build small networks to analyze real data and engage in packet tracer activities to analyze protocol and network operation. (Prerequisite: Firm grasp of microcomputer hardware and operating systems on non-networked systems. CIP 120 or equivalent is highly recommended as preparation for Basic Networking: CCNA 1).

    Digital Media

    * EDP 70 Digital Photography I
    This course introduces the student to the principles of digital photography and the differences between digital and film-based cameras and photographic techniques. Topics include using the camera's automatic mode, adjusting basic settings to control image resolution and size, working with light and the flash, and taking photographs intended for print, for electronic distribution (e.g., through e-mail) and for presentation on a website.

    * EDP 72 Digital Photography II (no offered in summer 2008)
    The fundamental concepts of photography introduced in the first course are presented in more detail. Students learn the following: how to take control of a typical digital camera and the quality of a photograph by manually setting features such as shutter speed and aperture width; how to take photographs for special purposes and in different environments such as landscapes, portraits, close-ups, and action shots. Esthetic and creative considerations including composition, color, lighting and style are discussed.

    Computers for Mature Adults

    * MAT 10 Computer Basics for Mature Adults
    Never touched a computer? Have computer anxiety? In a relaxed and supportive environment, adults 60 and over are introduced to the keyboard, monitor and mouse. Microsoft Windows and basic elements of word processing are covered. The skills you learn will open an exciting new world for you to explore!

    For students who wish to pratice in the College IT Center, a valid CUNYcard ID is required.

    * Internet and E-Mail Basics for Mature Adults
    A new world is at your fingertips as you learn the Internet to keep up with the news, read movie reviews, shop and get information on almost any topic that interests you. In addition, you are taught how to send and receive email to keep in touch with relatives and friends. Open to those 60 and over. Familiarity with the computer keyboard and mouse is preferred. Tuition reflects senior citizen discount. No additional discount applies.

    * PCW 22 Basic Computer Skills
    This hands-on workshop is for those who have little or no experience in using a personal computer. Topics include an overview of Microsoft Windows; use of mouse and keyboard; the desktop, icons, menus, toolbars, and other elements of the Windows interface; running programs such as WordPad; editing, printing, and saving simple documents. Enrollment limited: one student per computer.

    * PCW 32 The Basics of Selling on eBay
    Have you been buying on eBay and thinking of starting your own business? Then this is the course for you. eBay is the largest online marketplace with millions of users worldwide. Whether you are new to eBay, already a casual buyer or seller, or are looking to start a home-based business, this course teaches you the skills you need to become a successful eBay seller. An Education Specialist trained by eBay shows you how to open a seller's account, do market research, create listings, write effective titles and descriptions, take great digital photos, set pricing, open and use a PayPal account, monitor your listings and complete transactions. A comprehensive companion workbook is included. (Recommended prerequisite: PCW 22: Basic Computer Skills or equivalent.)

    * PCW 33 Byond The Basics of Selling on eBay
    Learn how to start and/or grow an eBaybased business, choose the right listing format,
    create compelling listings, use eBay listing tools, market your eBay business, benefit from an eBay store, pack and ship inventory and utilize online payments from PayPal. Attention is given to individual business goals on eBay. A comprehensive course manual is included. (Recommended prerequisite: PCW32: The Basics of Selling on eBay or equivalent.)

    PCW31: On-Line Social Networking
    Learn about the latest web-based technologies for social networking, online collaboration and personal expression. Keep a weblog (an online journal/diary). Visit websites that host blogs and wikis (websites that allow visitors to add, remove and edit content). Then learn to create your own.

    PCW18: Apple Macintosh Basics
    This class covers the fundamentals of the Apple Macintosh including startup, login and shutdown; the desktop workspace including the dock; the Finder; the standard menu bar including the Apple menu; basic file management including file system navigation, file naming conventions and the copying, moving and renaming of documents and their organization into folders; some important differences between the Windows and the Macintosh operating system including the use of the mouse and keyboard; a brief tour of Apple hardware; opening and closing programs and dealing with nonresponsive programs; and multimedia on the Macintosh.
