Mission of the Career Services Center

The Career Services Center (CSC) assists Lehman students and alumni with all phases of their career development to help them transition from college to career. We strive to provide the highest standards of comprehensive services and practices so they may successfully meet the challenges of a globally competitive job market.

Career Counseling

Individuals have the opportunity to discuss in detail career planning issues, rèsumès and cover letters, interests and skills assessment, job search strategies, as well as any other career related topics. Deciding on a major or exploring the opportunities that exist for a particular major can also be discussed. All personal information revealed during the course of the counseling session will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Alumni Mentoring Network

The Alumni Mentoring Network is an online mentoring program where you will receive guidance by professionals in your field of interest.  A mentor will provide you with career guidance, advice, support, and networking opportunities designed to help you achieve your academic and career goals. Some of the benefits of this program are as follows:

  • Personal satisfaction to help support and empower students with the skills needed to achieve their educational goals
  • Enhancing student’s knowledge with your personal perspective of the Lehman experience
  • Increasing the retention and graduation rates of students
  • Sharing professional and educational experiences with your Mentee(s)
  • Making a difference in students’ lives

To become an Alumni Mentor, contact the Program Coordinator at 718-960-8366 or, if you're on campus, stop by Room 254 in Shuster Hall.

Mock Interviews

Students can practice and evaluate their interviewing skills by participating in mock interviews with their Career Counselor. Before making the appointment, have your rèsumè reviewed by a Career Counselor and submit a job description for a position that suits your qualifications. The job description will be used by the interviewer during the mock interview.

Recruitment Activities

On-campus and off-campus interviews and seminars are arranged with companies and agencies interested in hiring Lehman students. There are also career-specific Career Expos offered throughout the academic year. You will meet, speak with, and submit your rèsumè to individuals from many different businesses.

Sometimes the recruitment event may be for the whole student body and sometimes only for students majoring in a particular area, e.g., sociology, accounting, etc. It is therefore important that you read your Lehman mail and periodically check the Recruitment Events or Simplicity website.

Internships and Summer Jobs

Internship help students gain valuable on-the-job experience in their particular field. Internships may be paid or unpaid. Read about what other Lehman students say about their internship experiences.

A listing of internship and summer job opportunities can be found at the Career Services Center. Periodically there is a workshop that discusses internships in depth. Workshops schedule.

Employment Opportunities

The Career Services Center provides several resources linking you to hundreds of part-time, summer, and full-time jobs in the private, public, non-profit, and government sectors. These jobs are posted on Simplicity and on our bulletin boards, and are updated on a regular basis.
If you are having difficulty finding work, you may want to make an appointment to see one of the career counselors to review your rèsumè, interviewing skills, and job search strategies.

Skills Assessment

The Career Center has a user-friendly software program called FOCUS 2, which can allow you to find out more about your skills, interests, and values and how they may relate to your career and life choices. It can be helpful if you are unsure about which subject to major in or which career direction to follow.

If you want to know more about yourself, first make an appointment to see a counselor to consider whether using the FOCUS 2 program is for you.

Career Lab

The CSC computer lab is located in Room 229 of Shuster Hall for student and alumni use on career related projects. In order to use one of our computers, you must bring your validated student or alumni CUNY Card with you.
