Water Sustainability Measures
Water Conservation
The majority of water loss or waste on campus is due to leaking, broken, or inoperative plumbing fixtures. The first step in reducing waste and water consumption is by replacing leaking or inoperative faucets and flush-o-meters with devises that will shut off automatically. In addition to controlling water use, replacement with automatic devices will not only replace faucets that are leaking or broken and wasting water, but also those that are manual and can be left running. Implementation will be executed in a phased approach over three years. The first phase in FY10 installed automatic faucets in the Music Building, Carman Hall, and Speech & Theatre Building, as well as automatic flush-o-meters in Carman Hall. Phase II in FY11 will installed automatic faucets and flush-o-meters in Shuster Hall and the APEX. Phase III in FY 12 will complete the project and install automatic faucets and flush-o-meters in Davis Hall, Gillet Hall, Old Gym Building, Student Life, and any facility not included in the previous phases. Future water conservation measures planned include replacement of existing water closets (toilets) with low flow fixtures.
Another conservation method being implemented is to decrease water use and waste by capturing rain from the roof and surrounding grounds and gray water from the sinks, storing the water in tanks, treating the water, and reusing it to flush toilets in the new science facility.
The facility is scheduled to open Spring 2012.
