Lehman Study Abroad Programs
SUMMER PROGRAM IN THE ISLAND OF CRETE!

The Lehman Study Abroad Office is committed to promoting international academic experiences. Our office oversees all Lehman faculty-led, study abroad, and exchange programs. These programs allow our students to further explore their academic interests at an international level, often times, accompanied by our faculty. Currently, Lehman sponsors five international programs.
During the summer, Lehman sponsors a history, archeology, and geology faculty-led program on the Island of Crete in Greece and an Irish language program in Connemara, Ireland. This winter, Lehman will be sponsoring two faculty-led programs, one taught by Professor McElligott in the English department in London, England and the second taught by Professor Mibenge in the Political Science department in Santiago, Chile.
In addition to our study abroad and faculty-led programs, Lehman also sponsors a semester/year long exchange program with Sungshin Women's University in Seoul, Korea. Sungshin offers a great selection of courses that are taught in English and cover various disciplines. Participants are also encouraged to take Korean language and culture courses.

Winter Program in Santiago, Chile
Description: Students will spend the first half of the program in Santiago, where they will spend time learning in the classroom, visiting archives and memorials, and engaging with guest speakers and community activists. The second half of the program consists of fieldwork outside of Santiago. Students will travel to a Native American Mapuche community in the south of Chile for training and experience in community outreach and needs assessment, interview techniques, institutional observation and the documentation of human rights situations of indigenous and otherwise underserved Chilean people.

Summer on the Island of Crete in Greece 2013
Description: This program will be led by two Lehman College professors, both experts in their fields: Prof. Marie Marianetti, Chair of the History Department, and Prof. Yuri Gorokhovich from the department of Earth, Environmental, & Geospatial Sciences. Available courses include "History and Archaeology of the Bronze Age Minoan and Mycenaean Settlements in Crete" and "Cretan Geological and Historical Landscapes." This program will run during the month of June and will include visits to various sites in the area.

Study Irish Gaelic in Connemara, Ireland
Description: Connemara, County Galway, is a place of wild beauty. On the west coast of Ireland, north of the Aran Islands, lies the village of An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe). The village is an important rural center in the Connemara Irish-speaking region. Buffered on all sides by other Irish-speaking areas, mountains, and water, An Cheathrú Rua exists in a region where the Irish language continues to be the community language spoken in homes and in shops. An Cheathrú Rua has several beaches that serve the village including a coral beach know as "Trá an Dóilín." The National University of Ireland, founded in 1845, serves over 15,000 students. Its "Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge" (Irish Language University Academy) serves native Irish speakers and students of Irish at satellite campuses in different Irish-language villages. The CUNY Irish language classes will be held at the An Cheathrú Rua facility which is called "Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain"(The Máirtín Ó Cadhain Building). Students live with local Irish speaking families and receive their meals from the families as well. In addition to Irish language classes, students will also be able to participate in social activities and cultural lectures. For more information about the program, click here.

Korean Exchange Program
This is an incredible opportunity to live in a fascinating city for a semester or a year. The offerings in Korea cover many of the disciplines taught at Lehman, and in addition, students study Korean language and culture. Lehman is also host to students from Sungshin. Lehman/CUNY students pay their Lehman/CUNY tuition and remain eligible for financial aid. If you are interested in this program, we will put you in contact with students on both sides of the Exchange who will be able to tell you what it was like to study at Sungshin and live in Seoul.
