Susan Markens received her BA from Brandeis University, and her PhD in sociology from UCLA. She has had NIH and Mellon post-docs, and was an Assistant Professor at Temple University prior to joining the sociology department at Lehman in Fall 2007. Her research is on issues related to gender, health and reproduction. She has published articles on topics such as PMS, the medicalization of pregnancy, and prenatal testing that have appeared in many of the top journals on gender and medical sociology. She has also written a book, published by University of California Press, titled Surrogate Motherhood and the Politics of Reproduction.

Professor Sanders’s professional interests includes business management, marketing research, consumer behavior and economics. Before coming to Lehman College, Deborah served as Executive Director of The Harlem Venture Group (HVG), a not-for-profit organization that she co-founded in 1996. HVG provided training and micro-financing services for hundreds of aspiring entrepreneurs and received several community service awards for its dedication to economic development in low-income communities. Prior to HVG, Deborah held several positions at the Du Pont Company over a period of 12 years. Starting out in engineering at a nuclear energy facility and moving into other areas of the company including medical products, she developed a variety of interests. She is active in her community, has served on many not-for-profit boards and currently serves on the board of The Columbia Business School Alumni Club of New York where she works on several committees. Her hobbies include boating and exercising. She lives with her family in Harlem.
