Academic Skills Workshops

Academic Skills Workshops address a range of topics beneficial to undergraduate and graduate students.* Workshop topics vary by semester. Advance sign-up is required for all workshops. Call 718-960-8175 to sign up for a workshop and to find out the workshop location.

Reading Strategically
This workshop will help students develop strategic ways of reading various types of texts, including scholarly research. Students who wish they could focus better and remember more from their readings should attend!

Principles of “Academic Writing”
Sometimes it may seem like every professor has different expectations and "rules" for writing. Students who want to learn more about what most professors value in their writing--regardless of the course--shoudl attend this workshop. Please bring course assignments with you so that we can learn using real examples that matter to you..

Integrating Sources: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing
This workshop offers a review of these three essential tools writers use in research-based writing. Students will practice using each with a sample text on their own work. We will address how proper use of these tools helps us avoid plagiarism.

APA Citation
Join us for an interactive review of fundamental APA citation style.

Tuesday, March 19, 6:15 p.m. -8 p.m., or Thursday, March 20, 6:15 p.m.-8 p.m.

Proofreading
Students will learn effective proofreading strategies and practice using them with their own work. Please bring in a sample of your own writing to work with.

Wednesday, April 10, 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., or Thursday, April 11, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

*Please note: ACE workshops are primarily designed for an undergraduate audience, though graduate students are more than welcome to attend.

Science Learning Center Workshops

The following workshops will be offered on Wednesdays from 3:00-5:30 p.m. during the Spring 2013 semester. Workshop instructors will review lecture material, answer questions, and provide additional resources to supplement course content. Students should prepare for these workshops by reading ahead, developing questions, and arriving with their textbooks.

Essentials of General Chemistry: For students taking CHEM 114 (Location: Davis Hall, Room 219)
Essentials of Organic Chemistry: For students taking CHEM 120 (Location: Davis Hall, Room 335)
Anatomy and Physiology II: For students taking BIO 182 (Location: Davis Hall, Room 137)

Workshops will run from February 6th to the end of the semester. Registration is required.
