Instructional Support Services Program

The ACE and SLC will be closed on October 12th from 12 PM-5:00 PM for a divisional meeting. If you need assistance during this time, please leave a voicemail at 718-960-8175.

Lehman College’s Instructional Support Services Program (ISSP) is home of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and Science Learning Center (SLC). The ISSP provides Lehman students with the opportunity to achieve academic success through the guidance and encouragement of peer tutors and professional staff members. We invite students and faculty to utilize the services offered through the ISSP, which include workshops and tutoring for undergraduate and graduate students seeking to improve their skills in writing and content knowledge in specific courses. At the ISSP, all of our tutors have received grades of A or A- in the classes they tutor and most are certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

Please take some time to review our website and note the services we offer.

Althea Forde,

History of the Instructional Support Services Program

College Reading and Learning Association certified programIn the 1980s, tutoring at Lehman College consisted solely of writing tutoring, which took place at the Writing Center in Carman Hall. In 1994, the Writing Center expanded and changed its name to the Learning Center, and began offering tutoring in a variety of humanities and social sciences courses. With the expansion, the Center moved to the Old Gym Building to accommodate the increased flow of staff and students. The Learning Center continued to grow over the years as workshops and symposiums were added to the services available for students. In 2000, the Learning Center further expanded under the current director, Althea Forde, and adopted a new name, the Instructional Support Services Program (ISSP). The ISSP became the umbrella for two tutoring centers: the Academic Center for Excellence, which offers tutoring for writing, social sciences and humanities courses, and the Science Learning Center. Given the expansion in services to students, leadership roles also grew. In 2004, an Assistant Director was hired, followed by a Writing and Literacy Coordinator in 2007, and a Science Learning Center Coordinator in 2008.

Under the direction of Ms. Forde, in 2000 the ISSP attained certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CLRA), a national organization which certifies tutor training programs. The ISSP received CRLA recertification in 2005 and 2010.

Today, the ISSP reaches almost 2000 students each year through tutoring and workshops. During the 2013-2014 academic year, ISSP provided 12259 hours of tutoring to graduate and undergraduate students, an almost double increase from the previous decade. Currently, the ISSP continues to think of innovative ways to reach students. In 2011, the ISSP began offering online writing tutoring, allowing students to submit papers online and receive helpful comments from some of the most experienced writing tutors. In 2013, the program also began to pilot online tutoring in social and natural sciences courses.
