Professor Justine McGovern

An Assistant Professor at Lehman College (CUNY) in the Department of Social Work, Justine received her doctorate in 2012 from the NYU Silver School of Social Work. Her research focuses on aging in a global context, with an emphasis on living with chronic disease, specifically, dementia. She has published and presented in the U.S. and internationally on bio-psycho-social issues in aging, social work education, and qualitative research methods.

At Lehman, Justine teaches core curriculum courses in social work practice and policy in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Before coming to Lehman, she taught at NYU and Hunter, primarily at the Masters level. In addition, she has been a guest-lecturer at the doctoral level on qualitative research methods at both NYU and Fordham. Also at NYU, Justine taught an elective on Clinical Issues in Aging, and developed the Writing Workshop, a course designed to support NYU’s international M.S.W. students.

Justine has a long history in social services, including in foster care, community mental health, and aging services. Justine has had a private practice in parental care services, supporting families managing the care of older relatives. In addition, she is a long-time volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association New York City Chapter. She was honored as an Alzheimer’s Ambassador in the first cohort of that recognition program.
