Students must complete four courses designated as writing-intensive, three prior to earning the sixtieth credit and one following. Individual sections of courses will be designated as writing-intensive and students may take writing-intensive sections of courses in General Education, major, minor, and elective courses. Distribution Courses

Distribution Courses for 2009-2010 [PDF]

  • Area 1: Individuals and Society. A systematic study of individuals, their impact on society, and society's impact on them. Goal: To introduce students to typical modes of inquiry and a systematic way of thinking about problems of individuals in society.
  • Area 2: Socio-Political Structures. A systematic study of the organizations and institutions of modern society. Goal: To introduce students to typical modes of inquiry and a systematic way of thinking about the organizations and institutions of modern society.
  • Area 3: Literature. Close readings of texts chosen to familiarize students with various authors, periods, or genres and the critical methods appropriate to their analysis. Goal: To increase students' understanding and appreciation of literature.
  • Area 4: The Arts. Introduction to art, music, dance, or theatre and the terminology, techniques, or tools of each. Goal: To familiarize students with a medium of creative expression and enable them to actively participate in individual aesthetic and creative experiences.
  • Area 5: Comparative Culture. Systematic way of thinking about similarities and differences among cultures. Goal: To develop understanding of similarities and differences among cultures.
  • Area 6: Historical Studies. Systematic historical study of the world's major events, ideas, institutions and personalities. Goal: To encourage understanding of and critical thinking about the world's major events, ideas, institutions, and personalities.
  • Area 7: Knowledge, Self, and Values. Systematic and critical ways of thinking about central moral and philosophical issues such as freedom and justice; right, good, and evil; mind and matter; knowledge, belief, and opinion; cause, reason, and explanation. Goal: To encourage understanding of and critical thinking about knowledge, self, and values.

LEH Courses

  • LEH 300: Studies in the Humanities and the Sciences. 3 hours, 3 credits. Selected topics in the humanities and the sciences studied from different disciplinary perspectives.

Note: In general, this course will involve at least three different disciplines, writing assignments and computer-based work along with research involving the library and Internet. Prerequisite: completion of at least 60 college credits.

  • LEH 301: The American Experience. An in-depth and interdisciplinary analysis of aspects of American society and culture with an emphasis on the question of what it means to be American. Note: In general, this course will involve at least three different disciplines, writing assignments and computer based work along with research involving the library and Internet. Prerequisite: completion of at least 60 college credits.

Writing Intensive Courses

Students are expected to write approximately 15-20 pages of proofread, typed work, that is turned in to the instructor for grading. In 100- and 200-level courses, this writing might consist of shorter assignments (e.g., eight to ten 2-page papers, four 4-page papers, etc.). In advanced 200- and 300-level courses, longer papers might be more appropriate (e.g., two 10-page papers, one 10- and two 5-page papers, etc.). Except in rare cases, one 20-page paper will not be sufficient for a "W" section.
