Lehman College

The edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) certification requirements focus on five key dimensions of teaching: planning, instruction, assessment, written commentary about teaching practice, and academic language. As a performance-based assessment, completion of the requirements are embedded in the student-teaching classroom experience (usually in the last semester of a candidate’s program).

The assessments include rigorous written commentary, video submission, and assessments as evidence of teaching skill, but more importantly of student learning.

Each credential (content) area has its own “Handbook” that includes details and guidance about meeting your specific certification requirements. You will have access to your credential area handbook through your edTPA Taskstream account.

About the Safety Net

Message from the Dean

The New York State Board of Regents approved an edTPA Safety Net that will expire on June 30, 2015. Until June 30th 2015, candidates who fail the edTPA can take the ATS-W as a replacement for a passing score on the edTPA. However, please be aware there are stipulations that you will need to meet in order to take advantage of the Safety Net.

All of the following requirements must be met by the June 30, 2015 deadline:

Taken and passed the ATS-W (after you have been notified that you have failed the edTPA)

Taken and passed the EAS, ALST, and the required CSTs for your area of certification

Applied and paid for the initial certificate through your TEACH Online Services account

Completed all the required NYS mandated workshops for your area of certification

I would advise you to consider taking the ATS-W if you have not already done so. It is possible that you will not need to take it; however, if you do not pass the edTPA, you might find yourself in a position of having to re-take the edTPA if you have not met all of the Safety Net provisions by the June 30, 2015 deadline.

If you have questions or need assistance, please visit the Certification Office in Carman Hall, Rm. B-33.

We want to make sure that Lehman graduates have the opportunity to make a difference in urban schools. In order to do so, we need to inform candidates about what it takes to obtain NYS teacher certification.

Best of Luck,
