Dr. Faith Deveaux is the chair of the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, & Special Education and the coordinator of the Graduate Program in Counselor Education. She received her B.A. degree in English literature from Skidmore College, her M.A. degree in counselor education, and her Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology from New York University. She completed an APA approved internship at the Children’s Village where she was also the first person to do a residency. She has had advanced training at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) and also in family therapy. She is a New York State licensed psychologist and a national certified counselor. Dr. Deveaux was the national chair of the Human Rights Committee of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors and an editorial board member of the Family Journal. She was the first recipient of the PRISM award, given by the Lehman College President's Committee on Pluralism and Diversity, for work in addressing pluralism and diversity issues on campus and fostering communication among different groups at the college. She is an active member of numerous professional organizations and has made presentations nationally and internationally.
Prior to coming to Lehman College, Dr. Deveaux developed two community based counseling programs. One program is a trilingual program (English, Spanish and Chinese) in the Lower East Side of New York for first generation college students to discover the options and opportunities in higher education. This program resulted in over 1000 students each year preparing for and entering college. The second program is in the Bronx and provides community based assistance for families under severe stress. She has also done independent psychological consultation with people suffering from anxiety and depression, parents dealing with issues of autism and special needs of children, serious health issues, and death, dying and bereavement. In all her work, the importance of cultural context is valued.
Dr. Faith Deveaux’s areas of academic interest include theories and practice of counseling, supervision and teaching, multicultural and cross cultural counseling issues, family and school counseling and parenting. As a participant at the Lincoln Center Institute, she has been developing the integration of aesthetic education into the teaching and training of counselors, and particularly the development of counseling skills and multicultural competencies through increasing multiple perspectives.
Dr. Deveaux’s current research interests are in the areas of improving teaching and learning through the integration of aesthetic education, supporting the building of multicultural competencies through action research, and the use of writing assignments in developing and refining key counseling skills in pre-service counselors.
