From the Chair

Professor Dene HurleyThe Department of Economics and Business at Lehman College encompasses studies in Economics, Accounting and Business. It offers undergraduate degrees in Economics, Accounting and Business Administration. In addition, a Master of Science in Accounting and a Master of Science in Business are offered with concentration options in the areas of finance, human resources management, and international business.

Students in the Economics program study the production, distribution, and consumption decisions at micro and macro levels, and examine economic problems and issues in the urban, managerial, financial and political context. Accounting students learn the basics of accounting and use that knowledge to evaluate the financial strengths and weaknesses of firms. In addition to learning the basics of economics, accounting, and management; Business students acquire knowledge in various areas including finance, marketing, human resource management, international business and business law.

Most of the Economics and Business faculty have applied work experience in their fields of study and have regularly published their research in peer-reviewed journals, frequently presenting their findings at professional conferences. Through the grant-funded studies of the faculty, there are also opportunities for students to participate in research with the faculty.

Training in Economics, Accounting and Business Administration helps to prepare our students for careers as economists, accountants, entrepreneurs, managers and administrators of business enterprises, government or non-profit organizations. Many of the students also continue on with their graduate studies at Lehman and other institutions.
