Full-Time Program
The full-time ESL program offers a complete course of study in English and meets the requirements for international students with F-1 visas. The program has a unique, comprehensive format that uses a personalized approach to learning. Students spend a substantial amount of time in the class of an experienced and caring teacher. Lessons are taught both inside the classroom and through outside special activities. Students may attend two seven-week terms in the fall and/or spring or a seven-week intensive term in the Summer. Students who complete this full-time program and meet all other academic requirements may be eligible for Lehman undergraduate admission without TOEFL.
The classes are divided into different levels of English—beginning, intermediate and advanced. To determine the level of study, each student must take a placement exam that includes writing, grammar, and speaking. This assessment test is given at Lehman College on several dates prior to each term. After test results are reviewed, students are assigned to class levels that match their abilities. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of each course.
Our teachers utilize integrated skills approach to foster learning. Classroom lessons have included fun and informative events, where students display native dress, share cultural recipes, and listen to world music. Projects have included creating class newspapers, photography and videos. Holiday parties and events aid in developing social skills and allow students at all language levels a chance to interact.
Contextualized field trips are used by teachers to enable students to practice their language skills for specific purposes and better understand the use of English. Some of the enjoyable and interesting activities have included visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History, the New York Public Library, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Zoo.

This 18-hour per week ESL program provides instruction in all skills and meets the requirements for international students with F-1 visas. Our program is designed for committed learners of all levels of proficiency who are determined to advance fast. The classes meet four days a week: Monday through Thursday. Students are placed in two courses—Grammar/Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking— based on their levels of proficiency which are determined by the placement test.
Spring B: April 17-June 5
Summer: June 27-August 16 (no classes July 4 and 5)
*Register for both ESL 14 and 15 and receive a $10 discount for one additional Continuing Education (CE) class registration! NOTE: Does not apply to other ESL classes and certain CE programs/courses.
